VITICULTURE

The Virgen del Galir winery sources its grapes from its own 20 hectares of vineyards, at an altitude of over 600m. The premium grapes are sourced from terraces composed of chalk and decomposed granite soils, which gives the fruit complexity, minerality and elegance. The climate is continental with Atlantic influence and the annual precipitation is 700-1,000mm depending on the areas. Winter are very cold and summers very warm.

A challenging year due to hail and drought, but September rains allowed for fruit to fully ripen. Production was down by 29% compared to 2015 with the style of wines likely to be fresher with crisper acidity.

WINEMAKING

Pre-fermentative maceration for 4 days at 0°C followed by 10-12 days of fermentation. Aged in American oak barrels for 6 months, followed by 6 months in bottle.

OAK TREATMENT

6 month.

TASTING NOTE

Vibrant dark cherry red in colour. Great aromatic intensity of fresh red fruits, balsamic and sweet spice. Red fruit aromas are balanced by subtle toasted notes from 6 months ageing in oak. Silky tannins and a soft fruity finish, this is a well-structured, mouth-wateringly fresh red wine.
